Frequently Asked Questions
What are the benefits of Academic Coaching?
Through coaching, the student gains greater self-knowledge of what strategies work for them. This results in effective planning and time management, greater focus in goal achievement, improved critical thinking and problem-solving abilities and ultimately success in reaching their academic potential. A supportive one-on-one coaching relationship, combined with feedback on progress and growth work to make a self-sufficient learner.
How many sessions are required?
An initial 1 ½ hour consultation and assessment is required. The number of coaching sessions is determined from the assessment. A minimum of six sessions is highly recommended, as this would provide a foundation for developing learning strategies, and a strong beginning toward academic success. Weekly coaching for a school term provides continued accountability and progress toward stronger grades/GPA.
My son/daughter is in grade 12 and is an excellent student. What benefit is academic coaching to a good student?
A gifted student may not be sufficiently challenged in the high school system and has not developed the strategies needed for success in university. Academic coaching can be very effective with gifted students by combining their natural abilities with the tools to maximize their success, motivation and love of learning.
I have a son in grade 6 who has difficulties. Is this program for someone in that grade level?
Coaching requires that the individual have capacity for insight and growth at a more mature level. As well, the strategies used in higher levels of high school, college, and university is different from elementary and middle school.
What role do parents play in the coaching process?
Depending on the student’s situation, the parents may be very much part of the process. Parents are provided with the results of the initial assessment and with the student, can determine the follow up plan.
What are the price ranges?
The initial assessment is $120. Customized packages are available or individual sessions are $65 per hour.
Why would I pay for this service when the university my daughter attends already provides it?
Universities and colleges only provide study skills and coaching to students who are currently enrolled. These services are generally offered at certain times of the year and are lacking in personal customized help and follow up, and are frequently staffed by graduate students rather than professional coaches.
